Three Ways to Bring the Beach Back Home

I miss the simplicity of the waves washing against white sand. But it doesn't mean I can't bring such sun-kissed beach serenity back home. Prompted by a new hair care routine, I began to reflect on the most coveted parts of vacation and motivated myself to make them new priorities in Memphis, too. Join me in a healthful approach to post-beach relaxation and rejuvenation.

1. RESIMPLIFY the diet.

Though daily schedules greatly differ on the beach and in the office, vacation's influx of sun and detox from unhealthy bites should translate to the "real world." A daily diet of whole foods and simplified presentations brings me back to the poolside retreat of Alys Beach. Bring on the avocado toast, colorful salads and fruit plates (and agave margaritas).

Don't you miss those days on the beach where hours of time (and a big meal opportunity) might pass without realization?

As Camille Styles shared this week, "these busy lives we lead often require doing everything very quickly and very efficiently, often on autopilot because we’re actually doing two (or five) things at once." So, let's channel our inner beach. By slowing down our hunger angst and taking our time through snacks and meals, we're more likely to reach for snacks or desserts later and realize that, though it's 11:30 a.m., we may not be ready for lunch yet after all.

2. READ often and uninterrupted.

Our days are spent constantly absorbing bits and pieces of topical news and content. Tweets are limited to 150 characters, and news feeds combine clusters of topics and opinions that seem to increase the ADD (attention deficit disorder) in each of us!

Just as we pull out a good book or aesthetic magazine on the sand, we should similarly soak up a great novel chapter or magazine feature every single day. Uninterrupted narratives challenge our vocabularies, our imaginations, and our creative inclinations. Turn over your phone while you're turning the pages, too.

3. REBALANCE the hair.

Beauty care (at the basics) is an essential daily deed. A treat-yourself, relaxed tradition -- whether a monthly spa pedicure, quarterly massage, or new hair regimen -- should inspire a rebalanced state of mind.

For my salt water and color-treated curly locks, I turned to DESSANGE Paris personalized scalp treatments to break the vicious cycle of combination unbalanced hair. Upon returning from Florida, I grabbed this collection at Target and discovered its brilliance--an oil-control, two-part hair care system that treats both the scalp and the lengths at-home.
